I'm Dr. Nick Crane. I've been a birder and naturalist all my life. My great uncle was a world renowned ornithologist, Robert Cushman Murphy, who gave me my first pair of binoculars when I was eight years old. My first summer job as a teen was working as a nature camp councelor and birding guide at the Massachusetts Audubon Society's Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary. My undergraduate work was in environmental studies and biology, and later I taught for the National Wildlife Federation and as a visiting teacher for Audubon.
I’ve been a professional guide in Costa Rica for the past 14 years leading paragliding tours and pioneering flying sites there. While exploring many of the parks and preserves, I've seen over 400 species of Costa Rican birds, about half of all the species in the country.
I'm excited to show you Costa Rica's amazing beauty and diversity. My company CostaRicaBirdingTours.org offers a unique, personalized approach, flexible to meet your needs and desires for the ultimate birding vacation. With only 2-4 clients we travel safely and comfortably in a roomy SUV. I know and love the landscape, the language, the culture and the natural history of Costa Rica. I'm a generalist, familiar with the birds and bird songs, but I also hire local guides who are genuine experts to join us at many of our locations. Join me for a unique natural history adventure!
